Few
places offer so much concentrated and accessible archaeology
and Byzantine art.
Archaeological sites record a history
stretching back at least 10000 years from the Neolithic
Age, through the Chalcolithic and Bronze Ages, the Geometric,
Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic periods and on to
the more recent Frankish, Venetian and Ottoman influences
and, most notably, the Byzantine centuries.
Numerous Byzantine churches
are scattered all over the island. Many of these display
quality samples of art, whether it is architecture,
wall paintings, icons, mosaics or wood-carving.
